DUI Suspect Crashes into Library Next to Police Station

A woman was arrested Wednesday night after crashing into the Rancho Peñasquitos Library.

Ask Big Bird and the Rancho Peñasquitos Library: Wednesday was a bad night for learning.

A driver thought to be under the influence of alcohol crashed into the Rancho Peñasquitos Library late Wednesday night, damaging the building without suffering injury, officials said.

The "vehicle vs. library" call came in around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a San Diego Fire-Rescue dispatcher said, though police reported the incident at 10:45 p.m. A 40-year-old woman, a lone driver, lost control of her sedan as she tried to make a left turn from Salmon River Road onto Fairgrove Lane, crashing into the southeast corner of the library, Officer Susan Steffen said.

The library is at 13330 Salmon River Road, at the intersection of the two streets, and, in a lucky twist for the suspect, right next door to the police station and across the street from Fire Station No. 40. Emergency officials were on scene quickly and the incident was closed at 10:57 p.m., the dispatcher said.

There was limited damage to the library's exterior, with only a minor impact on the inside, with library officials cordoning off a small corner, an employee said.
