You are invited to join Friends of the Poor for a 5K Walk along beautiful Torrey Pines Beach. We will be raising funds for the Oaxaca Education Fund, which benefits the children of migrant workers from Oaxaca, Mexico, who used to work in the fields between Rancho Peñasquitos and Del Mar in San Diego.
When agriculture ended in Carmel Valley, many migrant workers returned to their villages to grow enough food to feed their families. But there is very little paid work and cash is hard to come by. In Mexico parents must pay for uniforms and school supplies. Since 2012, in agreement with local authorities in Mexico, the Oaxaca Education Fund/Friends of the Poor have provided school supplies to all the children in grades K-12 in three villages. We will go to Oaxaca this August, purchase the supplies, and distribute them to 1500 children with the help of the local youth. Help us help the families of the men who for decades grew our vegetables in Carmel Valley! Help us help them keep their children in school!
Registration for this year's Walk will be at 8 a.m. at Torrey Pines State Beach. Look for the Oaxaca Education Fund sign near the stairs across from the restrooms. Early arrivals will be able to find free parking along Highway 101 (S21). Others may park in the paid parking lot. Carpooling is recommended.
A $20.00 donation to register is requested. Children walk free. Parents must be responsible for their children at the beach. Water and snacks will be provided. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and walking shoes.
If you cannot join us for this fundraising walk, let others know about it!
