Manny Pacquiao Wins By Unanimous Decision

Manny Pacquiao defends his WBO Welterweight Championship Belt against Sugar Shane Mosley.

Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao triumphed once again on Saturday, overcoming the future hall-of-famer Sugar Shane Mosley, in 12 rounds. Boxing is a construction of heroes and villains, in which the unscripted story is told by a measure of power, heart and determination in the ring. Both fighters are good guys in the boxing world, and this became a fight between Superman and an aging Batman.

Boxing fans around the world had their eyes glued to the screen to watch the much anticipated Welterweight Championship fight between veteran Shane Mosley and champion Manny Pacquiao, and Pacquiao delivered the goods.

The boxing practitioners who train at LA Boxing in Rancho Peñasquitos even celebrated their three-year anniversary by watching the Pacquiao v. Mosley fight at the La Jolla Strip Club (steakhouse).

LA boxing provides training in boxing, kickboxing and MMA. The various members of the LA Boxing gym had the chance to see two professionals going at it on the biggest stage of MGM, Las Vegas.

Eric Peralta, a 4S Ranch resident and boxing enthusiast who has trained at the LA Boxing gym, enjoyed the fight.

“Pacquiao’s fluidity carried the fight against a weary Shane Mosley. Pacquiao, the 8-1 betting favorite, displayed a fan-pleasing performance,” Peralta said.

Some were anticipating a surprising upset, reminiscent of the first time Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield met in the ring in 1996 (when it was never expected that the aging underdog, Holyfield, would win). Many anticipated a fight purely dominated by Manny “Pac-man” Pacquiao.  What they got was a cautious match with occasional spurts of hard-hitting power.

Earlier in the week at a press conference, Mosley told Pacquiao, “Come on, Manny. You know you want to knock me out. It’s OK; I want to knock you out, too.”

The fight was sporadically entertaining, as both came into the ring cautious. However, in the third round, Pacquiao landed a straight left, with more than a minute left in the round,  that dropped Mosley to the canvas.

After that stunning knockout, Mosley collapsed into a defensive shell for the remainder of the fight.

“Manny’s an exceptional fighter. Good speed and power. Power that I never got hit with before. He’s a warrior cut from my cloth,” Mosley said after the fight.

In the 10th round, things were kicked up a notch, as Mosley had seemed to knockout Pacquiao. Replaying the footage in slow motion, the “knockout” was clearly a slip, where Pacquiao was pushed to the canvas by Mosley.

Pacquiao landed 182 punches to Mosley’s 82 punches, making the victory quite obvious.

The pound-for-pound king Pacquiao was good, but he wasn’t as efficient as he usually is, as he said, “I wanted to move fast but in the middle round my legs just got tight.”

Mosley was simply not taking any risks, especially after he was caught by Pacquiao’s straight left hand in the third round.

“Well, I think he feel my power, I wanted to fight toe-to-toe,” Pacquiao commented after the fight.

Where does Pacquiao’s career go from here? All fingers point once again, almost automatically, to his most worthy opponent: “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr.
