PHOTOS: RB Idol Singers Face Off

The first round of the RB Idol competition was held Tuesday night.

In true American Idol-style, organizers of the fifth annual Rancho Bernardo Idol opted to switch up the game this year. For the first time, the Spirit of the Fourth staple got an early start with a first round contest on Tuesday night at the Poway Performing Arts Center.

Using the night as a fundraiser for the community's July 4th celebration this weekend, organizers brought together middle and high school-age amateur performers to compete for five finalist spots, based on audience selection. The finalists will perform again on July 4, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Webb Park. The winner—chosen by judges in the entertainment industry—will receive $500, with other prizes allotted for the remaining contestants. The winner will then perform at 7:30 p.m. during the nighttime activities at
