RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Do you want to get informed about e-bike safety regulations in Orange County?
Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez is hosting an e-bike safety class for children and parents on Tuesday, May 12.
The event will be held in partnership with the California Highway Patrol, with Officer Brian Kinsey slotted to speak sometime during the event.
Residents attending the event will learn about new e-bike regulations, accident prevention and how to protect their families against liability risks.
Topics to be covered at the event include rules of the road, riding with passengers, e-bike classes and much more.
The announcement comes after Vietnam War veteran and beloved Orange County teacher Ed Ashman died of injuries sustained by a hit-and-run crash involving a 14-year-old boy on an e-motorcycle in Lake Forest on April 16.
The boy’s mother, 50-year-old Tommi Jo Mejer of Aliso Viejo, was originally charged last month with child abuse and endangerment and being an accessory after the fact with knowledge of a crime, both felonies, as well as misdemeanor counts of allowing an unlicensed driver to drive a motor vehicle, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and unlawfully providing false information to a police officer, according to the county's district attorney's office.
Following 81-year-old Ashman's death, prosecutors filed an amended complaint Friday and charged Mejer with felony counts of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and accessory after the fact to a crime, along with misdemeanor counts of contributing the delinquency of a minor and providing false information to a peace officer.
It was not immediately clear if the recent tragedy would be addressed at the safety class.
The e-bike safety class takes place on Tuesday, May 12 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the RSM Belltower, 22232 El Paseo.
