Business Notebook: Optometrist Honored for Recognizing Risk of Stroke

Dr. Kathleen Andersen of RSM Vision in Rancho Santa Margarita has been named an Optometric Business Innovator 2011 in the category of “The Patient Experience” by Vision Monday and Review of Optometric Business. 

She is one of only 35 optometrists nationwide to be honored and featured in these major industry publications.

Anderson was the first eye care professional in the nation to offer a screening to detect the early signs of cardiovascular disease. Her commitment to helping patients know their risks for heart attacks and strokes—the No. 1 killer of men and women in the U.S.—comes in the form of imaging her patients’ carotid arteries which supply blood to the brain and eyes. Within a short time of using the technology, Andersen was able to identify several patients who were unaware of their high risk for stroke.  

Anderson has been practicing in RSM since 1991. In addition to glaucoma medical management, specialized contact lens evaluation, and vision therapy services, she also offers LASIK and cataract surgery.

Ung, president of the Eye Care Division of HeartSmart Technologies and the manufacturer of the technology Andersen uses in her practice. “Dr. Andersen and her staff provide an innovative and progressive approach to enhancing patient well-being and welfare through the implementation of the medical model of optometry.”

With the help of a Professional Advisory panel composed of a mix of optometrists (ODs) from both the private and corporate arenas, and professional OD business consultants, the two publications solicited input and suggestions to identify Optometric Business Innovators from across the United States.

The Rancho Santa Margarita Business Alliance will hold its monthly mixer on Aug. 2 at Tijeras Creek Golf Club from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for members, $20 for nonmembers, which includes appetizers and one complimentary drink ticket.
