Orange County's landfills are not simply the places where our trash goes. They are incredible feats of environmental engineering, and they even provide natural habitats. OC Waste & Recycling staff members, including biologists and engineers, are proud to welcome you on a tour. See how we operate landfills and what we do as stewards of the environment. . We look forward to seeing you!

What you will see on the tour:

  • Multi-media presentation about Orange County’s waste management system
  • Waste disposal area
  • Environmental controls
  • Habitat restoration areas
  • How landfill gas is creating green energy
  • Falcons working to keep seagulls out of the trash (seasonal)

Landfill tour basics:

  • Tours last approximately 1.5 hours, Either inside Air Conditioned Building or Air conditioned Tour Van (mostly in the Van)
  • We can accommodate up to 13 people per group
  • Visitors must be at least five years old. Guests with children must bring car seats if the California Child Passenger Safety law applies.
  • Arrive early for your tour. Late groups are subject to rescheduling.
  • Wear closed-toed shoes. This is mandatory.
  • All guests will be required to wear safety vests and hard hats, which OCWR will provide.
  • Every tour participant must bring a signed release form on the day of the tour. Parental signature is required for anyone under the age of 18. Waivers are available after you make your reservation

The Frank R. Bowerman Landfill is a state-of-the-art, Class III, municipal solid waste landfill. Opened in 1990 near Irvine, CA, it is one of the largest landfills in the state and the ninth largest in the U.S. The property spans approximately 725 acres of Irvine hillside with 534 acres allocated for waste disposal. It is permitted for 11,500 tons per day (TPD) maximum with an 8,500 TPD annual average. The landfill has enough projected capacity to serve residents and businesses until approximately 2053.
