Hikers, Be Aware. This Is Mountain Lion Country.

Whiting Ranch hiking trails were closed after mountain lion sightings. But what do you do if encounter one?

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Trails in Whiting Ranch are closed until further notice due to mountain lion sightings. All in the area are asked to heed the warnings, Orange County Parks has said.

Hikers in surrounding Orange County wildland areas, be cautious. The mountain lions are out, and multiple sightings have been made.

Stay vigilant when visiting a wilderness area.

"If you are entering a wilderness area, mountain lions may be present," a spokesperson from the Orange County Parks Service says. Always hike in groups, and minors under 18 should be under adult supervision at all times.

Be cautious, they warn. Your safety cannot be guaranteed.

"You are advised to stay alert for potential danger," they say.

People who have encountered mountain lions in the area have offered some words of advice for hikers.

First? Don't run.

"Hold your ground, wave your hands and shout!"

If the lion behaves aggressively, throw stones.

"Convince the lion that you are not prey, and that you may be dangerous to it," they write.

Make yourself big.

"Pick up small children and place them on your shoulders if you can," they say.

Don't try to hide.

"The lion has seen you long before you saw it," they say.

Most importantly, report every mountain lion sighting to a ranger as soon as possible.
