Rancho Santa Margarita, CA- Saturday, April 26th, 2014, over 800 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Orange County came together with the community to prepare and package 100,000 meals in conjunction with Stop Hunger Now. Each year Mormon’s around the world donate their time and money to participate in a service project, and with over 15 million members of the church worldwide, hundreds of thousands of different projects are completed. This year Mormons and community members from the Rancho Santa Margarita and Lake Forest areas, donated over $28,000.00for the supplies to package meals to ship around the world. Jeff Shields, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from Rancho Santa Margarita was one of the organizers of the event, "We wanted to do something this year that really makes an impact, and I think feeding 100,000 children does that."
In attendance at the event were Mayor Pro Tempore of Rancho Santa Margarita Brad McGirr along with his son, and Mayor Scott Voigts of Lake Forest with his family.Mayor McGirr noted the number of children and families involved, " you can talk to kids about their duty to other people until you're blue in the face, but until they get in and physically do it, they'll never learn. It's great to see so many kids here physically helping other people." Mayor Voigts noted that events like this were the reason he entered politics "You go where there is a moving vehicle, at events like this and with the help of other people we can all make a big contribution."
Stop Hunger Now is a non-profit organization that ships food and supplies to school feeding programs and orphanages worldwide. To date, Stop Hunger Now has shipped over 141,000,000 meals to needy children in more than 65 countries. According to Stop Hunger Now a child dies from hunger every 6 seconds, and with organizations like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints they are working to change that.
