Soccer Regionals: Aliso Niguel, Santa Margarita Win

Victories send both teams to championship games. For Aliso Niguel, it will be playing for the No. 1 spot in the nation.

Aliso Niguel won a Southern Section Division 1 championship, and the Wolverines moved a step closer to winning the Southern California Regional title on Thursday.

Although allowing a goal was a new twist, second-seeded Aliso scored a 2-1 victory over Woodland Hills El Camino Real to advance to the championship game on Saturday.

Aliso (22-1-4), which has played home games thus far in the tournament, will play Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga for the Division I title at Warren High in Downey. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.

There is no state title, so Saturday's championship will essentially serve that role. In fact, the game looms even larger than that: Los Osos is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation and Aliso Niguel is No. 2 in the ESPNHS Powerade Fab 50.

Though seeded fourth in the tournament, Los Osos (26-0-3) is undefeated this season after beating No. 1 Carlsbad, 3-2.

The Wolverines took the lead early, within the first 15 minutes, when the Los Angeles City Section champion scored an own-goal for Aliso when a header went the wrong way.

Sarah Roberts made it 2-0 early in the second half, and that was enough to make Sammy Prud'homme a winner in goal.

The goalkeeper turned away seven shots, and that was enough to turn away ECR (24-3-1).

Santa Margarita Catholic 2 (4), Glendora St. Lucy's 2 (3): The Eagles (18-5-3) pulled out a tension-filled victory with a 4-3 victory in penalty kicks to advance to the Division 2 championship game.

Santa Margarita, the top-seeded team in the division, will play third-seeded La Puente Bishop Amat (26-4-4) on Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Warren High.

Bishop Amat defeated No. 2 San Diego Cathedral Catholic, 3-2, in overtime.

Samantha Trenary scored one goal and delivered an assist on Kennedy Kraft's goal during regulation for Santa Margarita, but it was goalkeeper Chelsea Carey who came up big with a game-winning performance during penalty kicks.

St Lucy's (22-12-1) scored twice in the final 12 minutes of regulation to force overtime.
