Two Votes Separate Orange County's Next Supervisor

With 41,767 ballots cast, two votes separate the top candidates in the County Board of Supervisors special election.

Only two votes separate the top candidates for Orange County’s First Supervisorial District race, but an unknown amount of vote-by-mail and provisional ballots remaining to be tabulated.

As of 11 p.m. with all 101 precincts accounted for, Andrew Do, Former supervisor Janet Nguyen’s former chief of staff, leads the pack with 16,202 votes or 39 percent of the total votes. Also with 39 percent of the vote is former supervisor and state Sen. Lou Correa. Correa has 16,200 votes. In all, 41,767 ballots were cast.

This preliminary tally by the Orange County Registrar of Voters will be updated again Wednesday with any additional vote-by-mail ballots, paper ballots and provisionals cast at the polling places.

The top vote-getter will take office. The special election was prompted by Nguyen’s election to the state Senate. Turnout was 19.4 percent, 41,767 of 215,503 registered voters.

An aide to Correa expressed optimism.
``The hard work that was put it will pay off in the end,’’ field representative Alex Flores told City News Service.
There was no immediate response to a request for comment from the Do campaign.

The First District includes Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Westminster, the
unincorporated Midway City area and portions of Fountain Valley.

Other vote getters include Garden Grove Councilman Chris Phan, Vietnamese station VNA-TV news anchor Chuyen Van Nguyen, and Lupe Morfin-Moreno, an office specialist with the Orange County Health Care Agency.

ANDREW DO: 16,202 votes, 39.0 percent

LOU CORREA: 16,200 votes, 39.0 percent

CHRIS PHAN: 6,765 votes, 16.3 percent

CHUYEN VAN NGUYEN: 1,620 votes, 3.9 percent

LUPE MORFIN-MORENO: 734 votes, 1.8 percent
