What’s The Scoop: Kelly Vanderwarker loves nothing more than seeing her clients happy and refreshed after an hour-long massage or a relaxing facial. She first opened Mr. and Ms. Day Spa in Long Beach in 1996, and four years later, took up residence in the quiet suburb of Rancho Santa Margarita. Since 2000, she has offered the community a variety of top-notch services, including massage, facials, waxing, skin treatments and more. Vanderwarker’s sister, who lives an hour away, partners with her in the business, while Vanderwarker’s husband helps with the real estate end of things. It is their dynamic teamwork that has allowed them to stay successful and even open another facility in Long Beach as well. Vanderwarker, a Mission Viejo resident, enjoys the flexibility of owning her own business, and though she stays busy making sure things run smoothly, she loves being able to put her family first. Her energetic, positive spirit is a breath of fresh air, and despite these tough economic times, she has managed to stand out by offering her guests top-notch services at affordable prices for more than a decade.

What’s Unique: The spa is nestled in an ordinary-looking business complex, yet a step inside and one is quickly whisked into a very extraordinary paradise. Guests can relax in the quiet waiting room and enjoy comfy chairs, dim lighting and a magazine while they wait for their services. The spa offers several rooms for services, each one private, cozy and serene, as well a restroom where guests can shower afterward. Massage therapy is among the popular services; guests can enjoy everything from a Swedish Massage, Hot Stone Massage or even a Pregnancy Massage for expectant mothers. Currently, eight experienced therapists work on site, many whom have been with Vanderwarker for years.

Guests wanting to rejuvenate their skin will be pleased at the variety of facials Mr. and Ms. Day Spa offers; there’s something for every type of skin. The Acne Facial is popular among breakout-prone guests, while the Teen Facial is focused specifically on adolescent skin. The unique Pumpkin Facial comes complete with a pumpkin enzyme peel that rids the skin of dull, dry cells and softens fine lines. The Just For You Facial uses a variety of top-of-the-line Dermalogica products and serums, some of which are also sold at the front of the store.

Skin treatment is another popular service and includes everything from permanent makeup to body brushing to aromatherapy foot polish to the increasingly popular Brazilian waxing. Guests can also enjoy extra finishing touches like the Signature Hydrating Foot Wrap using coconut oil.

Spa packages are a great way for guests to enjoy multiple services at once. Both men and women can choose from a variety, including the Mini Spa Retreat, a one and a half hour package that includes a full session scented Swedish massage with a half session express facial. The package runs $105 per person and is great for those who are short on time.

Health-conscious guests will be pleased to find a chiropractor on site. Dr. Michelle Laus offers services on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and serves as a personal health coach to educate, encourage and support patients to natural balanced health. The spa also recently added a biofeedback specialist; this cutting edge technology is a computer wellness evaluation that can identify the root cause of many health problems including weight gain, energy loss, hidden toxins and allergies.
