SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The word “disabled” never means “incapable” to disabled people around the world. Different is what it means. The 25th Annual disAbility Awareness Event at Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, April 10, will underline that point.
The Access Fair will be held n the Santos Manuel Student Union Events Center from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jonathan Mooney, an advocate for disability awareness, will be the event’s keynote speaker. Mooney’s talk, “Journey from Where I Sit,” begins at noon.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments also will be available throughout the event.

The goal of the access fair is to deepen understanding about people with disabilities. The fair will offer a wheelchair activity for able-body individuals to help them better understand the experiences of wheelchair users. Workshops also will be held for those that have trouble typing, teaching them to use electronics to aid their typing abilities.
With Mooney’s lecture addressing learning disabilities, there will also be stations set up highlighting the difficulties that people with dyslexia experience. This particular workshop will have participants try to write while looking through a mirror.

As he grew up, Mooney, now a writer and activist, had issues in school due to dyslexia. He is a graduate of BrownUniversity’s class of 2000 and holds a degree in English literature.
Mooney is founder and president of Project Eye-To-Eye, a mentoring and advocacy non-profit organization for students with learning differences. Project Eye-To-Eye brings adults with disabilities into the lives of students with disabilities as role models, tutors and mentors.
The organization currently has 20 chapters in 13 states and works with more than 3,000 students, parents and educators nationwide.
