CSUSB vocal jazz ensemble to open for famed Swedish singers, The Real Group

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Famed Swedish a cappella singers The Real Group will come to California for only the second time in its 28-year history when it performs Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Claremont Colleges, where the Cal State San Bernardino Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Claremont Shades will open the show.

Considered one of the world’s best vocal ensembles, The Real Group has created an ever-fresh and original musical expression that is something between jazz, pop and Nordic European choir music.

The CSUSB Vocal Jazz Ensemble, also known as Au Privave, has performed at the Reno Jazz Festival and at various high schools and colleges around the California southland. Last year, the group performed at CSUSB President Tomas Morales’s investiture.

In 2012, Au Privave opened for The Manhattan Transfer at CSUSB. While quite comfortable in the jazz idioms, Au Privave is also adept at many other styles of music, including rock, pop, soul, gospel and hip-hop.

The Real Group has performed throughout the world, and when it arrives in California it will have come from appearances in Arizona, which had been preceded by performances in Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The group’s repertoire and versatility have made it possible for it to collaborate with symphony orchestras, jazz groups, pop bands and artists such as Barbara Hendricks, Toots Thielemans and Sir George Martin.

With 17 CDs under its own name, The Real Group initiated and hosted The Real A Cappella Festival in 2008. In 2012 The Real Group Festival drew visitors from more than 20 countries.

The ensemble is now in the process of developing the online educational website, The Real Group Academy.
