SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Nearly 500 Cal State San Bernardino students received President Obama’s 2014 President’s Volunteer Service Award during the annual Student Leadership and Development Reception at the Santos Manuel Student Union.
The volunteer awards were given to 491 students in CSUSB student organizations and Greek chapters that served at least 250 hours as a group within a year, or individual students who completed at least 100 service hours within a year, said Diane Podolske, director of the university’s Office of Community Engagement.
The 491 CSUSB students who received the award on June 4 served 29,881 hours in local communities, which translated into $787,066 in economic impact, Podolske said.

“Volunteer service is one of our campus’ values, and by recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can contribute to their community,” Podolske said. “The dramatic upswing in the number of CSUSB students recognized with this award is a clear indication that our students are answering the call to serve.”
The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes Americans for their demonstrated commitment to volunteer service. There are four levels of the award – bronze, silver, gold and lifetime achievement – based on the number of volunteer service hours completed, Podolske said.
