Redlands Honored for 'Efforts to Address Climate Change'

The Institute for Local Government and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative say the city of Redlands has made notable efforts in energy conservation and sustainability.

The city of Redlands was given two awards this month for its efforts in saving energy and adopting policies and programs which promote sustainability, according to state organization.

The Institute for Local Government and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative awarded Redlands with two Beacon Awards.

"The city’s achievements were recognized as a part of its participation in the sustainability recognition program, the Beacon Award: Local Leadership toward Solving Climate Change," according to a press release announcing the awards by the Institute for Local Government*.

Redlands received the following on September 20 at the 2013 League of California Cities Annual Conference in Sacramento:

  • Silver Spotlight Award for Agency Electricity Savings (5 percent savings, 2004-2012)
  • Silver Spotlight Award for Sustainability Best Practice Activities
According to the agency behind the awards, the city saved more than 1.1 million kWh in electricity from 2004 through 2012-- which is enough electricity to power approximately 175 California homes for a year, on average.

“We appreciate the recognition from the institute for Local Government,” said City Council Member Jon Harrison, a longtime advocate for sustainability goals and policies. “As residents and business owners in Redlands we are all very proud of the steady progress we are making towards being a more sustainable community.”
