Friday, June 20, 2014Β marked the 10th Anniversary of the Women of Distinction Awards. We are beyond thrilled to announce that one of our very own GSSGC members was recognized as one of several βoutstanding women in our regionΒ who have impacted the lives of many,βΒ said Mr. MikeΒ Morrell, Senator of the 23rd Senate District.
This woman is none other than our very own VP of RetailΒ and ProductΒ Sales, Ms. Elizabeth Locke-Thomas! Congratulations Ms. βE!β
The elegant affair was held at the National Orange Showβs Renaissance Room in San Bernardino. Senator Morrell beganΒ the eveningΒ by welcomingΒ guests, followed by his lovely wife of 33-yearsΒ JoanieΒ Morrellβs invocation to the crowd.Β Ms. Tammy Martin-Ryles, President of the Southern California Black Chamber of Congress and fellow 2014 Woman of Distinction, led the Pledge of Allegiance.
The senator first thankedΒ the Girl Scouts for attending the event, along with several other table hosts for their support.

In total, 74 womenΒ thatΒ live or work in the cities of Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, Loma Linda, San Bernardino, Highland, Banning, Beaumont, Calimesa, Yucaipa, Big Bear City, Big Bear Lake, Cedar Glen, Cherry Valley, Crestline, Lake Arrowhead, Hemet, Homeland, Menifee, Nuevo, San Jacinto, Phelan, Pinon Hills, and Wrightwood were recognized for their exceptional work.
βI am overwhelmed and thankful,β said Elizabeth, βbut seeing my daughter in the audience and knowing that she willΒ carry on the tradition of βmaking the world a better placeβ truly made my heart swell.β

Elizabeth was accompanied by her niece and daughter Emma, displaying Girl Scout pride.
The women earning the award had been nominated by βcivic leaders, community members and past Women of Distinction,β said co-host Penny Lilburn, 2006 Woman of Distinction and Highland City Council Member.

Mr. MichaelΒ Milian, son of fellow 2014 Woman of Distinction and Redlands residentΒ Christina Milian, co-hosted and introduced theΒ Christina Milian Inspirational Scholarship, a fund established in his motherβs honorΒ for young women who have been affected by cancer at home and are in need of financial assistance to attend a trade school of their choice. Ms.Β Milian is a six-year survivor of stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer who devotes her time to various organizations including the Inland Women Cancer Board and Stater Brothers Charities.
Congratulations to all these amazingΒ women and our very own Ms. Locke-Thomas on earning this Congressional Award! We hope to see many more GSSGC members and staff receive the honor in the coming years.
