Reign Wake Up to Beat Thunder

Ontario overcomes a lackluster start to get a 3-2 victory in a shootout.

Matt Register’s goal in the eighth round of the shootout lifted the Ontario Reign to a 3-2 victory over the Stockton Thunder in front of a sell-out crowd at Citizens Business Bank Arena on Wednesday night.

The Reign came alive after a lackluster first two periods, scoring twice in the third period to take a 2-1 lead over the Thunder. But Stockton’s Greg Miller tied it 53 seconds after the Reign’s second goal, sealing overtime.

Jake Newton scored on the power play and Everett Sheen scored the goals for the Reign.

Ontario, which had struggled on offense last weekend against Bakersfield, came out firing at Stockton goaltender Brian Foster, getting 45 shots on goal in the game. Ontario goaltender Michael Hutchinson was just as busy, stopping 37 of 39 shots in the victory.

The Reign will return to action Friday in Stockton, before returning home for a two-game series with Colorado on Saturday and Sunday at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Saturday’s game starts at 6 p.m. with Sunday starting at 3 p.m.
