Turnovers Doom Redlands in Loss

The Terriers fumble the ball away four times in a 21-15 defeat at Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos.

Fourteen points.

That's the amount of points that Redlands Coach Jim Walker says his team gave away Friday night in Rancho Cucamonga.

The Terriers fumbled the ball away twice inside the 10-yard-line -- once in the offensive end and once in the defensive end -- in a 21-15 loss to host Los Osos.

"We screwed up the whole game," Walker said. "We showed a lack of discipline with penalties and turnovers ... giving them the ball on the 5, and us fumble the ball on the 5 -- that's a 14-point turnaround."

The problems for Redlands started on its opening drive. The Terriers marched down the field, converting twice on fourth down and eating up more than seven minutes off the clock. But a fumble on first-and-goal from the 6 ended their threat.

Two drives later, the Terriers were able to open the scoring at the start of the second quarter. A Michael Stallone punt return set up Redlands at the Los Osos 30, and two plays later, Craig Lee sprinted in from 18 yards out and the team's only lead of the night.

But Los Osos quarterback Stephen Johnson would lead his team to touchdowns their final two drives of the first half to take a 14-7 lead at the half.

The second half got off to a rough start for the Terriers. They fumbled the ball away on their first play from scrimmage, giving Los Osos the ball at the Redlands 28.

The Terrier defense held, forcing a punt from the Terrier 42. But a muff inside the 10-yard-line was recovered by Los Osos' Tyler Walker, setting the Grizzlies up at the 9.

Given the second chance, the Grizzlies didn't make a mistake. Koa LaBonta took the ball around the left side for a 9-yard touchdown run.

The Terriers answered back, getting great field position on a return by Lee and a penalty on the return. Two plays later, Darryl Miller scored from 12 yards out. Stallone converted a run to close the scoring.

Redlands had more opportunities, including starting a drive at the Los Osos 35 late in the third quarter, but could not capitalize. To Walker, it means room for improvement.

"We've got a lot of issues that we've got to correct," he said. "We took a step in the right direction, played hard for four quarters. Things we have problems with, we'll be able to fix."
