REDONDO BEACH, CA — A vehicle reported stolen from the Redondo Beach area was recovered early Sunday after authorities said two juveniles led deputies on a pursuit topping 100 mph before being arrested in San Diego County.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the pursuit began around 1 a.m. after the agency's ASTREA helicopter received a license plate reader alert for the stolen vehicle as it traveled east on Interstate 8.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle near Willows Road in Alpine, but the driver accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph instead of yielding, authorities said. The vehicle exited and re-entered Interstate 8 as the helicopter maintained aerial surveillance.

California Highway Patrol officers later deployed spike strips near the Mollison Avenue exit in El Cajon. Authorities said the driver and passenger abandoned the moving vehicle and tried to flee on foot before both were taken into custody.

The suspects, identified only as juveniles from the Los Angeles area, were arrested on suspicion of evading a peace officer with willful disregard for public safety, vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The Sheriff's Office said the stolen vehicle was recovered and its registered owner was notified. No injuries were reported.
