REDONDO BEACH, CA — Beachgoers were being warned Thursday to avoid the water at two popular South Bay locations after testing found elevated bacteria levels.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued ocean water warnings for the area around Hermosa Beach Pier and the Avenue I storm drain in Redondo Beach.
At Hermosa Beach Pier, people were advised to avoid swimming, surfing and playing in ocean water within 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier.
The same 100-yard warning was in effect in both directions from the Avenue I storm drain in Redondo Beach.
The two South Bay locations were among nine areas across Los Angeles County where warnings were in effect after recent water samples showed bacteria levels exceeding state health standards.
Other warnings were in effect at the East Montana Avenue, Wilshire Boulevard and East Wilshire Boulevard storm drains at Santa Monica Beach, as well as Santa Monica Pier.
Warnings were also issued for Ramirez Creek at Paradise Cove, Solstice Creek at Dan Blocker County Beach and the entire swim area at Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro.
Meanwhile, a previous warning for Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey was lifted after recent samples showed water quality had returned to levels within state standards.
