REDONDO BEACH, CA — Drivers in Redondo Beach can expect a DUI checkpoint somewhere in the city Thursday night as police step up enforcement against impaired driving.
The Redondo Beach Police Department will conduct the checkpoint from 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, until 2 a.m. Friday at an undisclosed location, according to a department news release.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected using data on impaired driving-related crashes. The goal is to improve public safety by identifying and removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," traffic Investigator Rockseth said in a statement. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety."
Police reminded drivers that DUI laws do not apply only to alcohol.
Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with a person's ability to drive, police said. And while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to RBPD.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided through a California Office of Traffic Safety grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
