REDONDO BEACH, CA — A Redondo Beach police dog is recovering after an armed suspect bit off part of his ear while officers attempted to take the man into custody during a barricade in Wilmington, authorities said.
K-9 Wouter was assisting the Redondo Beach Police Department's SWAT team as officers worked to apprehend a wanted felon who had barricaded himself inside a residence and refused to surrender, according to the department.
Police said the suspect was armed, and Wouter was deployed to assist officers with the apprehension. During the encounter, the suspect bit the police dog, tearing off a portion of his ear.
Despite his injury, Wouter continued to assist officers and helped them safely take the suspect into custody, according to RBPD.
Wouter was subsequently taken to ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital for treatment. The department said Wednesday that he was recovering and taking a "much-needed break."
"Wishing our bestest boy a speedy recovery, and want him to get all the scratchies and treats!" police wrote.
The department also praised the Redondo Beach K-9 team for its work during the operation.
RBPD has not disclosed when or where in Wilmington the barricade occurred, the suspect's identity, what felony he was wanted for or what charges he faces following his arrest. Police also have not released additional details about Wouter's injury or when he is expected to return to duty.
