📰 News we're reading

1. Major Street Redesign Could Transform Redondo Beach's Riviera Village (patch.com) — Riviera Village in Redondo Beach could see a major makeover, with city-backed plans exploring wider sidewalks, bike lanes, curbless streets and reconfigured parking along South Catalina Avenue. The Business Improvement District's latest report details Measure M funding, evolving outdoor dining parklets, and upcoming City Council decisions that will shape how pedestrians, cyclists and diners experience this popular neighborhood over the next several years.

2. Redondo Beach hires consultant to monitor underground gas levels at Dominguez Park (easyreadernews.com) — Redondo Beach is installing new gas monitoring probes around Dominguez Park, a former landfill, after state regulators reviewed plans to upgrade the playground. The city council approved hiring Geosyntec Consultants for up to $639,000 to track any underground gas migration and develop mitigation if needed, while officials stress the park remains open and that no violations have been issued.

3. Final artists invited to submit ideas for Artesia Boulevard in Redondo Beach (easyreadernews.com) — Redondo Beach is moving ahead with a $485,000 first phase of public art along Artesia Boulevard, including median sculptures, monuments, a decorative crosswalk, enhanced benches and an LGBTQ+-themed piece at the North Branch Library. Nearly 200 artists responded to the city's call, and finalists chosen by a community panel and the Cultural Arts Commission are now invited to submit detailed proposals for these high-visibility installations.

4. El Niño 2026 could combine with these separate phenomena to bring intense flooding sooner than you think (fastcompany.com) — Record-high tides recently sent ocean water over the Redondo Beach boardwalk, and scientists warn that more severe flooding could hit the South Bay coast this winter. A powerful Super El Niño, recurring king tides and long-term sea level rise are stacking together, raising the odds of damaging water levels for Redondo Beach residents and businesses along the shoreline.
