Captain Kidd's Restaurant Receives Blue Zones Project Restaurant Designation

Last week, city officials gathered to celebrate Captain Kidd’s Blue Zones Restaurant Designation with a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony. Captain Kidd’s is one of more than 40 restaurants in the Beach Cities to receive designation through implementing healthier menu items and dining experiences for patrons.

To receive its Blue Zones Restaurant designation, Captain Kidd’s added three meals that meet the Healthy Dish Guidelines and two kids meals that meet the Guidelines of Healthy Children’s meals. The restaurant’s menu also includes half-sized portions for select items such as soup, clams/mussels, seafood and shrimp kabobs.

The latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index results, released back in January, showed dramatic improvements in well-being of Beach Cities residents over the past two years, with an approximate 10 percent increase in healthier eating habits (i.e. number of residents reported eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables on four or more days in the past week). The Blue Zones Project and Beach Cities Health District encourages local restaurants to support this initiative by implementing healthier menu options to encourage healthier eating habits through the Restaurant Designation program.
