Back to School: Notable Finale

We conclude our series with one last look back at notable RUHS alums.

For the past week, we have been quizzing readers about notable Redondo Union alums. Naturally, we didn't get to everyone—there have been lots of graduates in the school's 105 years of operation.

In our final installment of our back-to-school series, we're taking one more look back at notable RUHS students.

RUHS grads have gone on to become pro athletes, entertainers and even a U.S. senator. Some have made a name for themselves closer to home, designing surfboards, developing properties or serving as principals at Redondo schools.

Then there are the infamous RUHS students—Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme and porn star Traci Lords, known in high school under her birth name, Nora Kuzma—and those that made brief cameos. Demi Moore, then known as Demi Guynes, attended RUHS in 1977.

Politics:

Ted Stevens, class of '42. The long-time Senator from Alaska recently died in a plane crash.  

Pat Aust, class of '66. Former Redondo Beach fire chief and current city councilman.

Sports:

Rex Hughes, class of '58. Featured in Saturday's quiz. Became a NBA coach for several teams, including the Sacramento Kings.

Jim Allison, class of '61. Played football for the San Diego Chargers.

Morgan Ensberg, class of '94. Featured in Monday's quiz. Played baseball for Houston Astros, San Diego Padres and New York Yankees.  

Arts & Entertainment:

Jack Gaunt, class of '43.  Pulitzer Prize winner in 1955 for L.A. Times shot of a child swept out to sea in Hermosa.

Don Peterman, class of '49. Featured in Thursday's quiz. Cinematographer for many films, including "Splash" and "Men in Black."

Jeannie Myers Morris, class of '54. Featured in Tuesday's quiz. Pioneering sportscaster wrote bio of the late football player Brian Piccolo, whose story was immortalized in the TV movie "Brian's Song."

Tom and Dick Smothers, classes of '55 and '57. Comedians, hosted their own show on CBS in the 1960s.

Carol Neblett, class of '64. Featured in Sunday's quiz. Sang in the world's best-known opera houses before becoming an instructor at Chapman University.

Education and business:

Tom Killefer, class of '33. Rhodes scholar, WWII navy pilot; chairman and CEO of U.S. Trust of New York.

Iris Cummings Critchell, class of '37. Featured in Friday's quiz. She swam in the 1936 Olympics and became a pilot in WWII before developing the aeronauts program for Harvey Mudd College.

Nick Parras, class of '44. Featured in Wednesday's quiz. Educator spent his entire career in Redondo school district. Nick G. Parras Middle School, formerly Hillcrest Junior High, was renamed in his honor.  

Roger Bacon, class of '48. Developer; refurbished "Vetter" windmill and initiated Surfer's Walk in Hermosa.

Hap Jacobs, class of '48. Surfboard designer.
