Cities Look to Japan for Vitality City Inspiration
Redondo Beach hosts the governor of Okinawa, Japan, in a friendly exchange of health and longevity practices.
Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin and city council members welcomed Okinawa governor Hirokazu Nakaima at the on Tuesday morning to discuss improving community well being. Okinawa is one of five "blue zones," a geographical area where healthy living habits contribute to the world's longest lifespans.
"There is so much that we can learn from each other, from the lifestyle of the people of Okinawa over hundreds and thousands of years," Gin said.
The meeting was part of the city's efforts to eventually become a Vitality City, a three-year process that seeks to better the health and longevity of a community through various educational programs. Healthways and the are spearheading the initiative.
