Council Votes to Raise Speed Limits
The City Council votes to increase speed limits by 5 mph on two stretches of Inglewood Avenue.

The Redondo Beach City Council voted Tuesday to accept a staff recommendation to raise the speed limit on Inglewood Avenue from Artesia Boulevard to Marine Avenue.
The speed limits on Inglewood Avenue from Artesia Boulevard to Manhattan Beach Boulevard and from Manhattan Beach Boulevard to Marine Avenue will be raised 5 mph to 40 and 45 mph, respectively.
The speed limits on Beland Boulevard, Anita-190th Street from Pacific Coast Highway to Hawthorne Boulevard and Inglewood Avenue from 190th Street to Artesia Boulevard remain the same.

The new speed limits come after the city commissioned traffic surveys required by the California Vehicle Code. Without the traffic surveys, Redondo Beach police officers would be unable to use radar to enforce the speed limits.
The city council was hesitant to approve the new speed limits; however, the CVC requires that speed limits be raised when 85 percent of motorists travel at a higher rate of speed, unless there's a high rate of speed-related collisions.

"I've got a problem, very frankly," said Mayor Mike Gin, later adding, "I do have an issue raising that speed limit [on Inglewood Avenue between Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Marine Avenue] to 45 because you're going to get normal traffic flowing from 45-50 [mph]."
The Council is set to approve the ordinance at its next meeting, set for Aug. 2.
