Fast-Paced Comedy Centers on a Serious Subject: War

An ancient play that appeals to modern audiences, “Lysistrata” is a bawdy, fast-paced comedy about the battle of the sexes. Yet the focus is serious - the destructiveness of war. An upcoming adaptation presented by the El Camino College Theatre Department hits all the high points of Aristophanes’ 411 B.C. original play, with a 1960s twist.
The theme and message are conveyed through humor and fortitude as the play reveals the comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Vietnam War. The production itself is steeped in the youthful spirit of the 1960s anti-war movement, reflecting the colors and cultural originality of the era, including performances of classic pop and rock songs of the decade.
The comedy was adapted by Ellen McLaughlin and directed by Jerry Prell; performances are set for 8 p.m. Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 6-7 and at 3 p.m. Nov. 8 in El Camino College’s Campus Theatre.
Tickets for the performance are $15 each and may be purchased online at centerforthearts.org, by phone at 310-329-5345 or toll-free at 800-832-ARTS. The Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Campus parking is $3. The El Camino College Campus Theatre is located at 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard, Torrance.
