Fleet Week, Traditional Lion Dance: South Bay Week Ahead

Here are five things to know about this upcoming week in the South Bay.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — The South Bay is warming up, bringing new and exciting opportunities for residents to get outside and enjoy all the cities have to offer.

The week ahead is a busy one for South Bay residents, here are five things to look out for:

  1. Manhattan Beach Middle School will celebrate the completion of the school's new music building with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The completion was thanks to bonds passed by the community.
  2. For those who like to support local farmers and enjoy fresh produce, this week's farmer's markets will happen on Tuesday in Manhattan Beach, Thursday in Redondo Beach and Sunday in Rolling Hills Estates.
  3. LA Fleet Week kicks off this week in celebration of Memorial Day with a welcome party in downtown San Pedro on May 25 from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Festivities will include a beer and wine garden, dessert food trucks, live music, swing dancers and a free photo booth. Entrance to the event is free and will include lots of fun for the entire family at the world-famous celebration.
  4. The Los Angeles Ballet will bring its performance of "Lady of the Camellias" to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center this Saturday. The ballet's story is one of love, sacrifice and longing about a couple living their dream in the French countryside for a fleeting moment. Tickets are on sale now at the LA Ballet website and will run you anywhere from $40 to $84.
  5. To celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the city of Palos Verdes Estates will have a traditional Chinese Lion dance performance from the local Shaolin Temple Kung Fu School Chinese Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe. Guests can learn more about the culture and watch the traditional dance that is an extension of Chinese martial arts performed by students and masters of Kung Fu. The event will take place on May 27 at 3 p.m. at the Peninsula Center Library.
