The battle for our harbor is heating up. Last week CenterCal sent out a marketing brochure for their proposed mall in King Harbor. What was noticably absent from their marketing was any details of their planned mall... it was all fuzzy, glossy, glowing marketing terms. And no wonder, after spending seven hours at the Riviera Village Festival talking to residents about the CenterCal mall only two voiced their support for the project. The rest had significant concerns with:
- Free rent - the developer pays zero rent for our waterfront for 30 years unless the developer first shows a 10% profit.
- Traffic - the new development would require about 30,000 car trips on a weekend day to be successful.
- Views - the loss of 80% of the views of the ocean and harbor from Harbor Drive.
- Density - 25% more development than Plaza El Segundo on 1/3 of the land.
- Ugliness - the new three story parking lot at Beryl and Harbor
- Losing the Redondo uniqueness - The loss of identity as beloved local establishments are replaced by national chains.
- Impact on the harbor - the loss of access to the harbor and harbor recreation.
