King Harbor Mall mailer all fluff and no stuff

The battle for our harbor is heating up.  Last week CenterCal sent out a marketing brochure for their proposed mall in King Harbor.  What was noticably absent from their marketing was any details of their planned mall... it was all fuzzy, glossy, glowing marketing terms.  And no wonder, after spending seven hours at the Riviera Village Festival talking to residents about the CenterCal mall only two voiced their support for the project.  The rest had significant concerns with:

  1. Free rent - the developer pays zero rent for our waterfront for 30 years unless the developer first shows a 10% profit.
  2. Traffic - the new development would require about 30,000 car trips on a weekend day to be successful.
  3. Views - the loss of 80% of the views of the ocean and harbor from Harbor Drive.
  4. Density - 25% more development than Plaza El Segundo on 1/3 of the land.
  5. Ugliness - the new three story parking lot at Beryl and Harbor
  6. Losing the Redondo uniqueness - The loss of identity as beloved local establishments are replaced by national chains.
  7. Impact on the harbor - the loss of access to the harbor and harbor recreation.
The City picked a mall company to develop our harbor, so it should be no surprise that the project looks like yet another cookie cutter mall. (See CenterCal's website to see similar CenterCal projects) The City is ramrodding this sell out of our harbor through despite resident opposition.  Ignoring the residents and taxpayers will only lead to another Coastal Act lawsuit or referendum.  The time for the Council to show leadership and adjust this project is now.  It will save us all a lot of wasted time and taxpayer money.
