REDONDO BEACH, CA — A 63-year-old man was rescued off the coast of Redondo Beach Tuesday after being reported missing in the water for over an hour, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Lifeguard Division.

At 12:59 p.m. the LaCo Fire Department received a call from the man's spouse who said they had last seen the man swimming out to sea by the Ruby lifeguard tower. Lifeguard Captain AJ Lester said they quickly started an air, land and sea search to find the man.

The man was found unharmed at 2:15 p.m. just over a mile out to sea and transported to a local hospital after over an hour of searching from rescue boats, lifeguards and divers, Lester said.

"The fact that we found him was great because it usually doesn't turn out that well," Lester said. "This is a good, positive outcome to be able to find the person who went missing."

Lester said multiple teams contributed to the rescue including helicopter teams, Baywatch Del Rey and the sonar team.
