Redondo Beach Cafe: A Little Bit of Everything

Redondo Beach Cafe offers Greek, Canadian and American dishes in a hockey-themed environment.

At first glance, the seems like a typical old-fashioned diner -- a counter area, a welcoming staff and kitschy memorabilia on the walls. Look a little closer, and you'll notice that a majority of the wall collection consists of hockey decor. Even the televisions are set to hockey games, and there's even a Canadian hockey channel.

The menu also serves more than just burgers and sandwiches. Many Greek, Canadian, Italian and American staples are also available. This wide variety made it a little tough to decide.

Starting off with the poutine, a Canadian favorite, which was fries covered in gravy and topped with cheese curds. The combination may seem a little bit strange, but it was tasty. Perhaps it will start to appear in more places.

Next was a Greek classic, moussaka. Eggplant and ground beef served in a portion large enough for left overs. Once again, this dish was cooked very well; however, the rice pilaf that accompanied it was subpar. Also, the raw onions and the tomato slathered with Feta cheese seemed sloppy and unnecessary.  The moussaka alone would have been enough.

The servers were very attentive throughout the meal. They tried coaxing in a humorous matter to sick around for dessert. It was a valiant effort, but the appetizer and entree were enough.
