Redondo Beach Doctor Sentenced to Seven Years Behind Bars in Narcotics Case

The District Attorney's Office, which was pushing for a longer prison term, objected to the sentence.

LOS ANGELES, CA -- A doctor who ran a medical clinic in Redondo Beach was sentenced Thursday to seven years behind bars for selling powerful narcotics to undercover police officers.

The District Attorney's Office objected to the sentence that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy imposed on Gerard Goryl.

"We were looking for a higher sentence," said Deputy District Attorney Ryan Dibble.

Goryl, 61, pleaded no contest last Dec. 1 to 38 counts, including illegally prescribing a controlled substance and possession for sale of a controlled substance.

Goryl, who has been in county jail since October 2014, was barred from the practice of medicine in September 2014 while his case was pending. His license expired in August 2015, according to the California Department of Consumer Affairs' website.

Goryl's 69-year-old former assistant, Wilfred Arvizo Jr., is awaiting trial on a half-dozen charges.

Prosecutors allege that the two men sold hydrocodone and Xanax without any type of physical examination or medical need to undercover officers over a two-month period in 2014.
