Redondo Beach Unified Honored As Green Ribbon Winner

Redondo Beach Unified was noted for its emphasis on student and staff safety, and the solar shade structures included on each campus.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — The Redondo Beach Unified School District was among winners of the 2017 Green Ribbon School award.

The district received U.S. Department of Education honors for reducing environmental impact and costs, improving health and wellness, and providing effective environmental education.

"I want to congratulate all these outstanding schools for this tremendous honor," said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.

"Teachers, students, administrators, and staff are working together to show the importance of learning about the environment, following sustainable practices, and integrating environmental education into all facets of learning, particularly Science, Technology, Engineering and Math," said Torlakson, a former high school science teacher.

The Department of Education chose honorees from 25 states and the District of Columbia.

Torlakson previously designated the school district as a California Green Ribbon Schools "Green Achievers" at a March 3 event in Redondo Beach.
