Residents Favor Teen Tanning Ban

Local beachgoers tell Patch they support a state Senate bill that would ban minors from using indoor tanning beds.

Teen health is the main concern when it comes to indoor tanning, residents told Patch recently.

A bill authored by state Sen. Ted Lieu and awaiting state Assembly approval those under age 18 from using tanning beds. Under current law, minors between 14 and 17 can use tanning beds with parental consent, but many residents are already wary of the health risks the devices pose to teens.

"They don't realize when they're younger the consequences it has on both their health, in terms of skin cancer, and their looks," said teen Hayley Lawson.

Opponents of Senate Bill 746 argue that it strips the basic parental right of deciding whether a child may sunbathe indoors. No date has yet been set for an Assembly review.
