The new fitness center and weight room opened for use at Redondo Union High School last week. With ten new two-station weight lifting racks, the football team as well as another team can work out together inside the new Field House Weight Room, Athletic Director Andy Saltsman said.
The new weights, the space and the large roll-out doors are the sorts of things needed to have a serious strength and conditioning program, said Saltsman, who credited Head Football Coach Gene Simon for his involvement in helping to design the facility.
“Now, we have a lot more interest in the weight room,” Saltsman said, adding that a total of 24 varsity sports teams will share the weight room.

In the new Fitness Center, a row of twenty cardio machines stands next to a row of 20 weight machines, all low- or no-impact. Saltsman credited Physical Education Instructor Steve Shaw for his vision and work to make the fitness center what it is.
The new facilities are part of the $145 million Measure C bond measure voters approved in 2008.

In Sea Hawk Pavilion, construction workers are tearing up the gymnasium floor. The original plan was to save the center court circle, but that plan had to be scraped because a 14-foot by 14-foot section of the hardwood floor needed to preserve the full circle was too big to fit through the doors.
So Head Basketball Coach Tom Maier and Saltsman said the Sea Hawk symbol inside the center court will be cut out, saved and placed somewhere appropriate in the renovated gymnasium, about a year away.
