RUHS Off to State Academic Decathlon

Redondo Union High School is one of 22 Los Angeles-area teams competing in the California Academic Decathlon.

Teams of students from 22 Los Angeles-area high schools—including —will be in Sacramento on Thursday to compete in the weekend-long 2012 California Academic Decathlon. with the delegation led by last year's national champion, Granada Hills High School.

The Los Angeles County Office of Education will send a contingent of nine teams, led by its local champion, Torrance West High School, which won the county Academic Decathlon with 45,132 out of a possible 60,000 points. The school has won seven of the last eight county Academic Decathlon titles.

Also representing the county at the statewide competition will be Beverly Hills, Arcadia, Burbank, , Pico Rivera El Rancho, Torrance South and Torrance high schools.

Granada Hills High School, which was last year's national champion, won the Los Angeles Unified School District's Academic Decathlon in February with a score of 51,913.3 points out of a possible 60,000.

The LAUSD will send a record 13 teams to the statewide competition. Other schools competing will be Marshall, El Camino Real, Franklin, Taft, Van Nuys, Palisades Charter, Hamilton, Garfield, Bell, Los Angeles, San Pedro and Francis Polytechnic high schools.

The statewide competition, which has the topic "The Age of Empire," will test students in art, economics, language/literature, math, music, science and social science. The winner, which will be announced Sunday, will advance to the national competition April 25-28 in Albuquerque.
