South Bay By Jackie January 19, 2017

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Looks like we’re in for another rainy weekend…. but ya gotta love it. It’s
amazing how green the South Bay has become with all this precipitation.
While it is our nature as Southern Californians to be active outdoors,
as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow so eloquently put it, "every so often,
into each life some rain must fall". Never fear, we’ve got you covered
with plenty of indoor events and activities where you can stay warm and
dry over the next few days.

They really need to change the name of this event as it actually runs for two weeks…… DineLA Restaurant Week is a bi-annual dining event established to introduce diners to the
extensive assortment of restaurants in neighborhoods throughout L.A.
County. DineLA Winter Restaurant Week takes place over 14 consecutive
days and runs from January 13 through January 27.
Local foodies and visitors to the area will have the opportunity to
enjoy a selection of specially priced prix fixe menus from some of LA’s
best restaurants during this this period. Restaurants from El Segundo to
Rancho Palos Verdes will be participating in this culinary event. Some
restaurants will feature lunch, some will offer dinner and some will
present both, so be sure to check the website at http://discoverlosangeles.com/restaurantweekv2/.
Diners may make a reservation online at Open Table or contact the
restaurant directly. Due to the popularity of this event, advance
reservations are strongly recommended. Walk-ins are welcome but there is
no guarantee they can be accommodated. This is a great opportunity to
sample something different and it’s sure to whet your appetite without
emptying your wallet!

This event is now sold out……. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the 2017 State of the Region Luncheon featuring Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Congressman Ted Lieu, on Thursday, January 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
South Bay constituents can expect for Waters and Lieu to delve into
myriad advocacy priorities for the region, including education funding;
workforce development; infrastructure and transportation efforts; and
land use and development. This annual event provides an update on those
policy concerns with particular emphasis on how federal policy decisions
may affect our region. Tickets are $46 per person or $460 for a table
of 10 for Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce members. Non-members can
reserve seats for $76 per person. For additional information and ticket
purchase, call (310) 540-5858 or visit the website online at https://www.torrancechamber.com/event/state-region-2/. The DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance-South Bay is located at 21333 Hawthorne Boulevard, Torrance, CA.

Palos Verdes Art Center presents the Opening Reception: Aaron G. Green & California Organic Architecture on Saturday, January 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. The curator, architect and architecture historian Alan Hess, will give a talk at 7 pm.
The exhibition will feature rare photographs and original architectural
renderings and plans from the noted architect’s office, as well as
period shelter magazines spotlighting Green’s work. The exhibition will
remain on view at PVAC through May 28, 2017. In addition, on February 4 and February 5 at 8 p.m.,
there will be a special event featuring Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre.
“Architect Aaron G. Green (1917-2001) FAIA, was one of Organic
Architecture’s most talented proponents. Inspired by the complex
patterns, rugged textures and varied forms of nature, Organic Modernism
offered an alternative to the sharp-edged glass box Modernism known as
the International Style. Though he worked primarily in the San Francisco
Bay Area, Green launched his career in Los Angeles after World War II
when the region’s creative energy flourished. Green’s long independent
practice produced Organic designs for custom homes, public housing,
churches, schools, and internment facilities. He was widely published in
House Beautiful and Architectural Digest. But his additional role as
Frank Lloyd Wright’s associate in their joint San Francisco office also
placed him at the forefront of some of America’s most visionary
architecture during the fruitful final decade of Wright’s life. The
graceful Butterfly Wing bridge to cross southern San Francisco Bay was
never built, but the equally visionary Marin County Civic Center was;
Wright entrusted Green to see it to completion after Wright’s death.
This is the first exhibit of Aaron G. Green’s work to be presented in
Southern California.” – Alan Hess, Curator. For additional information,
visit the website at http://pvartcenter.org/. Palos Verdes Art Center is located at 5504 West Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
