This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of MacBeth and Taming of the Shrew will take place during July and August. Macbeth: “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” Seduced by supernatural prophecy, Macbeth and his Lady embark on an ambitious quest to win the Scottish Throne. In the aftermath of their success, we glimpse a world torn apart when a volatile, paranoid tyrant becomes King. The Taming of the Shrew: When rebellious Katherina stands in the way of her younger sister Bianca’s marriage, fortune hunter Petruchio is enlisted to “tame” the elder daughter, freeing a path for Bianca’s motley suiters. From their first meeting, sparks fly and the ultimate battle of the sexes ensues – leaving us to wonder, who is taming who? BaleenKitchen at the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach has reopened following a complete renovation and redesign that began in January. For the relaunch, they hired veteran Executive Chef Leandro Bongarra to do the menu highlighting Coastal California Cuisine. Chef Bongarra has previously worked as Executive Chef at Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood, as well as Chef de Cuisine at Stefan’s at L.A. Farm, working along Stefan Richter, runner up of the “Top Chef” season 5. He studied Culinary Arts at Le Courdon Bleu in Pasadena and at Scuola di Cuccina in Roma, Italy. BaleenKitchen overlooks the Redondo Beach Marina from the Portofino Hotel and has been completely redesigned, resulting in a celebration of the building’s maritime esthetic. The 3,480 square-foot space features a shingled exterior and new divided light windows, with panoramic views of the local marina. The interior is inspired by the ocean, incorporating shades of blue and grey, and provides a casual and intimate dining experience with indoor and outdoor seating, fire pits, and a private dining room that seats up to 50 people. Live entertainment will take place in BaleenLounge on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. For the full schedule, visit the website at http://www.hotelportofino.com/calendar.aspx.
