South Bay By Jackie Weekend Guide August 3, 2017

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Is it hot or what? While I adore our home’s proximity to the beach, about this time every year I seriously question the wisdom of builders that didn’t believe coastal homes needed air conditioning. My husband and I have discussed installing A/C several times, but in the end, we opt not to. (So I’m sitting here melting as I type this.) These hot, humid, summer days remind me of childhood – again, beach house without A/C – when we had only one way to beat the heat: go to the beach, dive in the water, and stay there all day. Lucky for us, A/C is now the norm and we have any number of ways to stay cool indoors…. but this weekend it’s all about being outdoors, with lots of great events happening all over the South Bay. You know the drill: wear loose, light clothing; hydrate, hydrate, hydrate; apply lots of sunscreen; avoid the kitchen at all cost. Stay cool, my friends!
The annual International Surf Festival continues through Sunday, August 6. The host city for this year’s Festival is the City of Manhattan Beach. The event promotes the four South Bay beach cities, the world’s best lifeguard service, and physical fitness for thousands of participants. Scheduled events include the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Medal of Valor Dinner, Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament (better known as 6-man!), surfing championships, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run, sand soccer, the Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier Paddleboard Championship, sand castle contest, beach volleyball and several other activities. The International Surf Festival is presented by BEACHSPORT.org, the Chambers of Commerce and the Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Department of Beaches and Harbors. For additional information and schedule, visit the website at http://www.surffestival.org/.
The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau host the annual Summer Sidewalk Celebration in downtown Hermosa Beach from Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The family-friendly event allows residents and visitors to browse through merchandise on the sidewalks of Pier and Hermosa Avenues, enjoy live music and take advantage of enticing discounts. Restaurants are also offering various specials and several businesses will offer children’s activities. The summer weekend brings the community together as business owners find the sidewalk sale to be the perfect opportunity to mingle with customers and showcase their merchandise in a festive atmosphere. It’ll be a lively two days in town with Movies on the Beach, Summer Concerts on the Beach and the International Surf Festival taking place as well. So spend a sunshine-filled weekend shopping and dining in Hermosa Beach!
