The Hermosa Beach Police Department will host Coffee with a Cop tonight, Thursday, July 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. All community members are invited to attend, meet with Hermosa Beach Police officers, discuss community issues and drink coffee. Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the Torrance Police Department. This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of MacBeth Taming of the Shrew will take place during July and August. Macbeth: “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” Seduced by supernatural prophecy, Macbeth and his Lady embark on an ambitious quest to win the Scottish Throne. In the aftermath of their success, we glimpse a world torn apart when a volatile, paranoid tyrant becomes King. The Taming of the Shrew: When rebellious Katherina stands in the way of her younger sister Bianca’s marriage, fortune hunter Petruchio is enlisted to “tame” the elder daughter, freeing a path for Bianca’s motley suiters. From their first meeting, sparks fly and the ultimate battle of the sexes ensues – leaving us to wonder, who is taming who? The next performances are scheduled as follows:Torrance – Wilson Park Gazebo, 2200 Crenshaw Boulevard Friday, July 28 at 7pm: Macbeth Saturday, July 29 at 7pm: The Taming of the Shrew Open grassy area by the gazebo – come early to get close. Sloped lawn gets steeper the further you get from the playing space. Low beach chairs or blankets work best. Warm layered clothing recommended. Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ignite imagination, promote literacy and offer a venue for technical and performing artists to exercise their passion. So grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. These shows are FREE and open to the public. The Torrance Rose Float Association will host the annual Luau Party Fundraiser on Saturday, July 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Toyota USA Automobile Museum. The family friendly event features live music, a spectacular Hawaiian show, plenty of island food, photo booth and activities for the kids. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite Hawaiian shirt, dress or grass skirt, if they dare. The evening will include opportunities to support the Torrance Rose Float Association with drawings and a silent auction. In addition, this will be one of the last chances to visit the Toyota USA Automobile Museum which will be closing at the end of September. The City of Torrance Community Services Department and local Homeowners Associations are proud to sponsor Movies in the Park. These movie nights will take place at various parks throughout the city this summer. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Pack up a picnic basket, blanket and lawn chairs and join friends and neighbors for an evening of family-friendly cinematic entertainment as the parks convert into outdoor movies theaters. Each event will feature a different movie beginning at dusk (around 8 p.m.) so bring a jacket, popcorn, cocoa and snacks and join in the fun! The Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, July 30 at Live Oak Park. The Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix features nine races catering to all levels of cyclists, as well as a wide range of community races. The fan favorite kids’ races for children between the ages of two and 12, will be held at 12 noon, followed by the Women’s Pro 1-3 race at 1 p.m. The last race of the day will be the Men’s Pro 1-2 race at 2 p.m. Riding either a bicycle or a tricycle, kids compete for various medals and each participant receives an official race number, t-shirt, medal and goodie bag. Adult cyclists take on the challenging course in an effort to win a portion of the $21,500 in prize money being awarded that day and one of the coveted Grand Prix winners’ jerseys. The Chevron Kids’ Zone for children two through 12 years has been expanded this year. In addition to the nine races and the Chevron Kids’ Zone, the event will include food vendors, local exhibits, and lots of family fun. The next South Bay Food Swap will take place on Sunday, July 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Honest Abe Cidery. South Bay Food Swap is an eclectic gathering of artisan food lovers, who exchange extraordinary, handmade and homegrown food creations. Their mission is to bring together the community by sharing a love and passion for creating, and growing, fabulous food representative of various cultures and world travels. A Food Swap is part silent auction/part village marketplace/part fun-loving open house. It’s a modern take on an old tradition. Your homemade creations become your own personal currency that you can use to swap with other participants. No cash is exchanged. Artisanal goodies change hands and everyone goes home happy and inspired. Anyone can participate! Home bakers/cooks, canners, gardeners, food bloggers, professional chefs, students…pretty much anyone who likes to grow, make, or share food. There are food swappers of all ages and cultures. All participants must be individuals trading goods that they made, grew, or foraged themselves. Some examples of popular food swap items include jams, pickles, salsa or relishes, baked goods, granola, spice mixes, homemade pasta, vegetables or herbs. The sky is the limit. This is the final yoga event of the series…… Join Beach Cities Health District for the FREE Summer Fitness Series: Mindful Yoga on the Beach, Monday evenings in July at 6:30 p.m. The weekly event takes place on the sand south of the Manhattan Beach Pier. Get moving and de-stress with this free, public event that brings together community, fitness and fun! Everyone is welcome to participate — women, men and children — and you can participate at your own pace. By all means, invite friends, family and co-workers! Registration starts at 6 p.m. with the hour long yoga class beginning at 6:30. All participants must sign a waiver. Attendees should bring their own yoga mat. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, athletic clothing and bring a jacket in case of cool weather. Classes will be led by certified instructors from the Center for Health & Fitness. The annual National Night Out takes place this year on Tuesday, August 1. This unique crime and drug prevention event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. This annual event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness by generating support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and sending a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Residents are encouraged to organize block parties and other social events. National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program. The benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night. The annual International Surf Festival will take place Wednesday, August 2 through Sunday, August 6. The host city for this year’s Festival is the City of Manhattan Beach. The event promotes the four South Bay beach cities, the world’s best lifeguard service, and physical fitness for thousands of participants. Scheduled events include the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Medal of Valor Dinner, Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament (better known as 6-man!), surfing championships, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run, sand soccer, the Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier Paddleboard Championship, sand castle contest, beach volleyball and several other activities. The International Surf Festival is presented by BEACHSPORT.org, the Chambers of Commerce and the Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Department of Beaches and Harbors.
