November 2, 2017 When was the last time you attended a concert, theater or dance production, exhibit, lecture series or other cultural program locally? I’ve been to a few in recent weeks, and (considering the fact I manage a local calendar of events) it still never fails to amaze me how much talent is to be found in our South Bay bubble. With the holiday season approaching, you’ll definitely want to plan ahead. Soon enough, the kids will be on school break and you’ll be preparing the guest room for visiting family and friends. The many fabulous South Bay cultural institutions are listed on the Recurring Events page on my website. Scroll down, take a look at the schedules and season brochures, and purchase tickets now before they sell out. Trust me, there’s something for everyone! Beach Cities Health District offers a new Blue Plate Special at area restaurants every month. For the entire month of November, everyone will receive 20% off select healthy dishes at Hermosa Beach Fish Shop, Lido di Manhattan and Fitch’s Kitchen Monday through Thursday. Each month, the Blue Plate Special (20% off a healthy dish) will be offered at three restaurants in the Beach Cities. This cannot be combined with any other offer and substitutions are not permitted. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.bchd.org/. Mixt Studios presents the second annual Mixt & Mingle tonight, Thursday, November 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mixt Studio will keep the doors of the work+shop open late for a festive collaboration celebrating local artists and entrepreneurs. Palos Verdes Art Center presents the Opening Reception: Exene Cervenka – Lipstick Sunset on Friday, November 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event features recent collage art by the acclaimed poet, artist, author, and vocalist of the band X. Exene’s collages mix images and text in a pairing that she has compared to the music and words of songs, creating tableaux that recall Joseph Cornell’s enigmatic boxes, Constructivist design of the Russian revolutionary avant-garde, and the cut-ups of beat artist/writer Brion Gysin – filtered through a lens of punk/folk Americana. Rooted in her practice of art journaling begun in the mid-1970s, Exene’s collages combine handwork and appropriated images, written words and found text. Similar to her songs, the narrative is not long storytelling, but presents strongly lit windows to a world both perplexing and highly personal. The exhibition will be on view through November 26. The exhibition is accompanied by Exene Cervenka and John Doe of the band “X”, Mike Watt & The Secondmen and FEELS playing at Brouwerij West on November 4, in a benefit concert for Palos Verdes Art Center. Door opens at 6 p.m. General Admission is $15, VIP $75. “X emerged from the L.A. punk scene as the most critically lauded American band of the early ’80s … for all the speed and thrust of their playing, X claims roots in rockabilly and old-time country music, which echoes in the vocal harmonies of John Doe and Exene.” – Rolling Stone. Now in their 40th year, X has been called “L.A.’s least likely iconic band.” – L.A. Weekly. In recognition of the importance of X to Los Angeles, City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell has declared October 11 “X Day”. On October 13, the Grammy Museum opens the exhibition “X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles” Info at http://www.grammymuseum.org. Exene and John Doe will present their music in an acoustic set. The event features a set by each of the three bands, food trucks, and beer by Brouwerij West. Proceeds from the concert will help enable Palos Verdes Art Center to expand art education programs for neighboring communities of the Port of Los Angeles. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.onenightonly.live/exene-lipstick-sunset. Palos Verdes Art Center is located at 5504 West Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
