The South Bay hosts an astounding variety of special events and activities year round!

There are lots of fun and fabulous Halloween activities and events taking place over the next few days ensuring a solid ROI on your costume this year. I’m not sure yet what my costume will be, but I hope to see some of you around town – even if we don’t recognize each other. As always, be safe out there!

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will be hosting a FREE Influenza Outreach Clinic for residents and community members to get their flu vaccinations today, Thursday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ken Miller Recreation Center. The Manhattan Beach Police Department will take ‘Protect and Serve’ to a whole new level at the annual Tip-A-Cop event, where police officers and staff serve as hosts and waiters to raise money for the Special Olympics. The community is invited to Tin Roof Bistro tonight, Thursday, October 27 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a memorable dining experience and exceptional service. Manhattan Beach Police Department staff will collect tips and donations to benefit Special Olympics, which provides athletic training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the South Bay Area. Tips are tax deductible donations. Since 2012, the Manhattan Beach Police Department’s Tip-A-Cop events have raised over $50,000 for local Special Olympics athletes. The Redondo Beach Elks Lodge will host a Halloween Costume Dance Party tonight, Thursday, October 27 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.This event is the Halloween edition of the monthly Ballroom Dances. A live band will play music from the Big Band Era and more. Take a spin on the huge wooden dance floor or just sit back in the theater type seating and enjoy the music. Shade, Redondo Beach’s new luxury boutique waterfront hotel, continues to celebrate its grand opening with Pints for Prostates Beer Tasting in partnership with Torrance Memorial Medical Center tonight, Thursday, October 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will feature tastings from local craft breweries such as, King Harbor Brewing, Strand Brewing and HopSaint Brewing, and presentations from Torrance Memorial experts on important men’s health topics along with a local prostate cancer survivor who will share his personal experiences. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Movember Foundation, an international organization focused on research and support for men’s health. Friday, October 28 is the final Cruise at the Beach for the season! Before you head out to trick or treat or slay demons, stop by Ruby’s Diner and take in what is sure to be a surreal scene with a Halloween theme. Costumes are encouraged and who knows, they may have some vintage ‘monster’ trucks! Cruise at the Beach takes place from 4 to 8 in the Ruby’s Diner parking lot located at 245 North Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach.

Art Flying Yoga & Art Flying Aerial will be celebrating Ofrenda de Dia de los Muertos on Friday, October 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. This special day celebrates the lives of people who have passed away. This is a FREE celebration for everyone that wants to honor the passing of a beloved one. The Aztecs developed the ritual some 3,000 years ago because they believed one should not grieve the loss of a beloved ancestor who passed. Instead, the Aztecs celebrated their lives and welcomed the return of their spirits to the land of the living once a year. That’s where the food, drinks, music and ofrendas (offerings) come in. It’s a Potluck so bring your favorite dish to share. Bring pictures, write a calavera (short poem in the form of epitaphs of your beloved one), it could also be a poem, a message, quote, a funny story, weird habits, or embarrassing moments. Art Flying Yoga will provide Pan de Muerto, Hot Chocolate and Fruit Salad. The evening also features aerial arts performances by students and teachers. The winners of the Costume Contest will receive a certificate and one week of unlimited aerial classes to share with friends or family. The 9 categories are most colorful, cutest, sexiest, scariest, least recognizable, most original, funniest, favorite, and best face painting. Berry Bly Productions presents South Bay Scream on Friday, October 28 at The Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club. The festivities get under way at 9 p.m. with DJs spinning the hottest club and dance tunes in three separate rooms. The celebration includes multiple dance floors, performance artists, tarot readers, scary creatures, lighting and visual effects, smoking patio, parking and much more. Costumes are required and guests must be at least 21 to attend. It’s the biggest Halloween party in the South Bay and everybody will be there! The Unified Small Business Alliance invites children of all ages to Cocoa with a Cop on Saturday, October 29 from 9 a.m. to noonat Starbucks. This is a children’s version of the very popular Coffee with a Cop program. Members of the Torrance Police Department, Redondo Beach Police Department, Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, and the Gardena Police Department will be attending. Starbucks will serve complimentary hot chocolate to the kids (while supplies last) and coffee for the officers. The City of Rancho Palos Verdes and the Society for California Veterinary Vaccine Care will hold a low-cost Pet Vaccination & Microchip Clinic on Saturday, October 29 from 10 a.m. to noon at Hesse Park. Cat owners should come between 10 and 10:30 a.m. if possible, and dog owners from 10:30 a.m. to noon. All dogs at least 4 months of age are required by law to be vaccinated for rabies. Vaccines for cats will also be available at this clinic. Microchip services for cats and dogs will also be available. Pet owners must be at least 18 years of age to participate. All pets must be on leashes or in carriers, and only healthy and non-pregnant animals will be vaccinated. Also, please bring the license tag, license renewal notice or prior rabies certificate to receive a three-year rabies vaccine for your dog; otherwise the rabies vaccine will be good for only one year. Please bring vaccine records if possible. The Society for California Veterinary Vaccine Care will administer the low-cost vaccinations and provide microchip services for cats and dogs. Cash or Credit Cards will be accepted for vaccines and microchip services. The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department presents the annual Family Halloween Carnival on Saturday, October 29. The event takes place at Manhattan Heights Park from noon to 4 p.m. and is designed for children ages 2 to 13. A costume contest and parade gets under way at noon with several costume categories and prizes for Most Original, Scariest and Judges Choice. Costumes can always be enhanced with a little face painting and artists will be on hand to create small designs or entire face masks. Play carnival games, participate in the push-up challenge, tour the haunted house, decorate cookies and more. The cost for each activity is $.50 – $2. Tickets for all events will be sold at the Information Booth and are $.25 each. Bills over $20 will not be accepted. Tickets are also required for goodies from the Snack Stand. Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach will host the annual Halloween Bash on Saturday, October 29 beginning at 8 p.m. The boutique hotel will be decked out in Halloween decorations and will feature a DJ, bottle service, costume contest and handcrafted cocktails. Guests, ghouls and goblins are encouraged to dress for the occasion. A costume contest will take place at 11 p.m. for a chance to win a gift certificate to Zinc@Shade. The Mermaid is hosting their first annual Halloween Party & Costume Contest on Saturday, October 29 from 9 to midnight. The event features a pool tournament, DJ and drink specials, in addition to a costume contest at 10:30. The best costume and best mermaid costume will each win a $100 gift card. The Automobile Driving Museum presents Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 30 from noon to 3 p.m. While exploring the museum, guests can go in search of tricks and treats in the trunks of the historic vehicles while learning the history of the cars and the people that owned them. Come dressed in a costume and enter the Costume Contest! The ADM will also offer the classic SundayDrive. Children must be at least 10 years old to ride along. Guests can take a ghoulish ride in a 1955 Packard Caribbean, 1941 Dodge Business Coupe or 1937 Chrysler 4 Door Royal. The City of Torrance Community Services Department invites the public to enjoy the annual Halloween Carnival on Monday, October 31 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Wilson Park. The Carnival is a safe, family friendly alternative to trick-or-treating. It will feature games, crafts, face painting, a photo area, spooky music by DJ Ozzie, a costume parade and much more! The costume parade will take place at 6:30 p.m. Unlimited-use wristbands are $10 per child and are required to participate in carnival activities. Food will be available for purchase from on-site food trucks. The event will take place, rain or shine. Dogs and other pets are not allowed at this event. The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department presents the annual Halloween Frolic & Haunted Stroll on Monday, October 31. This popular, annual event takes place in the 300 and 400 blocks of Main Street between 4 and 7 p.m. and features live entertainment, food vendors and fun for the whole family. A costume contest, sponsored by the El Segundo Kiwanis Club, begins at 4:30 and all ages are encouraged to participate. Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded following each age group competition. The El Segundo Women’s Club is sponsoring a pumpkin carving contest. Entries are due at the Judging Area by 5 p.m. and prizes will be awarded to the Most Original, Scariest, Funniest and Best Overall. While admission to the event is free, unlimited use of the games and bounce houses is $8 per child. The City of Lawndale presents a Halloween Haunt on Monday, October 31 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lawndale Civic Center Plaza. The event features a haunted mansion, costume contests, arts and crafts, games, jumpers and DJ Ed spinning spooky tunes. A reptile show will offer children an up-close and hands-on opportunity to learn about snakes, iguanas, lizards and other reptiles. Food vendors will be on site serving up Thai BBQ, Jamaican, pupus, popcorn and other refreshments. The costume contest is always a big hit and prizes will be awarded to the winners in all age divisions. This is a free event and tons of fun for the entire family! It’s that spooky time of year when ghosts, goblins and monsters roam the streets in search of tasty morsels. These little fiends have a keen craving for sweets and it’s crucial to keep them sated. Who knows what diabolical tricks they have up their tiny sleeves? Satisfy their cravings at the annual Riviera Village Halloween Trick or Treat on Monday, October 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. This event has become a Redondo Beach tradition, attracting thousands of children each year to participate in a safe, fun Halloween ritual. Catalina Avenue will be closed to traffic from Avenue I to Palos Verdes Boulevard to accommodate the trolling hoards. Music, face painting and other entertainment will be on tap throughout the Village and local shops will hand out candy and other treats from 4 to 6 p.m. The little creatures will surely have worked up an appetite collecting all those treats, so why not make an evening of it and stop for dinner in one of the many fabulous Village restaurants? Quite a crowd is expected, so be sure make your reservations early. It’s a small sacrifice to keep the little ghouls at bay! The Hero Network, a new Positive Social Movement, is now accepting nominations through October 31, 2016 on their Facebook Page for “Everyday Heroes”! The winner of the Hero Network Contest will be awarded a $2,000 cash prize plus $500 to the winner’s favorite charity and the person who nominates the winning hero will win $500! The founders of the Hero Network are self-funding this cash award as a way to pay it forward and to promote positivity in the world. Nominators have the opportunity to honor an Everyday Hero with their nomination. An Everyday Hero can be a parent, sibling, friend, neighbor, teacher, coach, mentor, someone in law enforcement, veteran, foster parent, animal rescuer, community volunteer or someone else. Earlier this week, I attended a media event at Strand Brewing Company to launch the new beer cans. Yes, you can now go into a store and buy a six pack of the original South Bay brew!
