South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide September 21, 2017
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Its official - today is the last, full day of summer as autumn begins tomorrow at 1:02 p.m. PDT. Has anyone else noticed the chill in the evenings lately? My husband and I can usually make it well into October with just a light blanket, but it’s been nippy enough that we’ve been using the comforter this week. While summer is my favorite time of year in the South Bay, I’m looking forward to cooler temps, rainy days, crackling fires, hearty stews, comfy sweaters, wearing lots of black, and all the other things we eschew during the warmer months. It’s also time to start thinking about, and planning for, the holidays…. yes, they’ll be here before you know it. (With that in mind, I may head over to Nordstrom and take advantage of the Triple Points weekend!) If you’re not ready to get your head in that space just yet, there are plenty of fun and fantastic events scheduled over the next few days to put you in an autumn state of mind.
Hawthorne is becoming quite the art filled city…… The City of Hawthorne Arts Commission will host the Ramona Park Mural Dedication today,Thursday, September 21 at 4 p.m. Residents and visitors to Ramona Park are encouraged to attend and celebrate the completion and reveal of a project that took a year to plan and complete with the purpose of enriching the area with public art. The planning started in August 2016 when City of Hawthorne Art Commissioner Gloria Plascencia approached artist Velvet Marshall to donate a mural. It took a year to plan, get approved, and was painted by hand with the assistance of her team: Nastassia Perez, Chris Chavez and David Covey. The Good Neighbors Mural at Ramona Park spans approximately 30 feet wide and 9 feet tall and is painted with Golden Artist Colors acrylic paint that was donated by a representative from the Golden Paints Company specifically for the project. This is the second mural donated by local Hawthorne artists with more projected donations in the near future due to a planned project led by Art Commissioner Gloria Plascencia and Council Member Olivia Valentine to beautify the city. Attendees will enjoy beverages and small bites courtesy of Grandma’s House Catering. For additional information, visit the Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/872460702922619/. Six separate South Bay and Long Beach art exhibitions will be connected via free shuttle bus service over the weekend of September 23-24. The offering makes it easy for the public to arrange and enjoy an art-filled day at no cost. That’s the impetus behind the South Bay/Long Beach Shuttle Art Tour set up by the South Bay/Long Beach Hub (SB/LB Hub), a collective of local arts institutions produced in partnership with Getty-led Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. Nestled in the southwest corner of Los Angeles County within easy proximity of Los Angeles International Airport, the Port of Los Angeles, and the Port of Long Beach, the six art institutions of the SB/LB Hub operate with an eye toward collaboratively promoting and generating enthusiasm for their respective Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibitions. Together, they trace thematic connections within the region around them while drawing attention to the ways that Latin American and Latinx art functions in the context of the above-mentioned points of entry and exit. The participating museums include ESmoA, Angels Gate Cultural Center, Torrance Art Museum, Otis College of Art and Design, University Art Museum and the Museum of Latin American Art. The SB/LB Shuttle Art Tour runs from 10am to 5pm and takes participants by complimentary bus transportation to every member institution in the region. For the weekend, Saturday, September 23 to Sunday, September 24, parking and bus pickup will be available at all six museums, with the most parking available at MOLAA, TAM and Angels Gate. In addition, an art passport will be handed out to all Sept. 23-24 weekend visitors who take advantage of the connecting bus shuttle. The art passport functions as a mock identification for the museum region and is a great memento in and of itself.
