This first Weekend Guide of the fall season features a handful of events showcasing some of the many cultures that make up the South Bay, along with several cultural arts experiences. The South Bay has such a vibrant cultural arts scene, providing countless opportunities for residents (and visitors!) to experience art in all its forms and expand our perceptions. You don’t have to be well-versed in modern art or opera to enjoy it! And the best part? Many of these events are FREE to attend and perfect for date night! You can thank me next week…..
The El Segundo Champions of Business Celebration will take place on Thursday, September 26 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Toyota Sports Performance Center. Spend an evening on the ice with El Segundo’s business leaders where the L.A. Kings perfect their game! Share cocktails and dinner with the business leaders who are making El Segundo the region’s best destination for business. The Keynote Speaker is L.A. Kings President, Luc Robitaille. The 2019 Champion of Business Honoree is Michael Hackman, Chief Executive Officer of Hackman Capital Partners. The Roadium Open Air Market presents Drive-In Movie Nights this fall and winter. The Roadium is reviving its classic 1950’s drive-in for a one-of-a-kind movie-going experience. Palos Verdes Performing Arts’ popular concert series at the Norris Theater soars with music from Evita September 27 through September 29. One of the most riveting musicals in Broadway history, Evita features a brilliant Tony-winning score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The compelling story of Eva Peron’s meteoric rise to become the first lady of Argentina, will come to vivid life with a full orchestra and cast singing the stunning score from the show including Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, High Flying Adored and On This Night of a Thousand Stars. The City of Hermosa Beach in partnership with Hermosa Valley & View Parent Teacher Organization will host the Hermosa Heroes Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, September 28 from 8 a.m. to noon at Hermosa Lifeguard Headquarters. The event aims to show appreciation for the police officers, firefighters and lifeguards who support and protect our community on a daily basis. Kala Koa Entertainment presents the Los Angeles International Ukulele Festival on Saturday, September 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. Celebrating the little four-stringed wonder – the Ukulele – which has been captivating hearts and bringing musical joy into people’s lives for over 100 years, the 2019 Los Angeles International Ukulele Festival presented by Kala Koa Entertainment, is an exciting day-long event dedicated to exploring the musical versatility of the ukulele for the experienced ukulele player, the occasional strummer, or simply the curious spectator. This unique, family-friendly Festival includes workshops for all levels of playing ability to work on technique or simply learn to play, and live all-star performances by some of today’s most popular ukulele players (included in admission). The Automobile Driving Museum presents the annual Japanese Car Show on Saturday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A primarily American museum, the Automobile Driving Museum celebrates all automotive genres at this annual Japanese car show. The City of Gardena hosts the annual Food, Wine & Cigar Festival on Saturday, September 28 from noon to 6 p.m. on the front lawn at City Hall. The event features over 80 food, wine, cigar and other outdoor retail vendors. General admission ticket prices include entrance to the event and wine glass ONLY. The 34th annual South Bay Invitational Field Show Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 28 from 4 to 10 p.m. at the West High Football Stadium. West High Entertainment Unit’s South Bay Invitational is the premier marching band competition in the South Bay. As one of the first 2019 field show tournaments adjudicated by the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SBCOA), various high school bands from Southern California will come together and compete for the prestigious first place title, and a chance to secure their spot in the 2019 SBCOA Field Championships in November. LA Opera presents Opera in the Park: A Live Broadcast of La Boheme on Saturday, September 28 from 5:30 to 10:30 in Columbia Park. Be transported to the bustling cafe’s and hidden corners of 19th-century Paris in Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme. The opera will be transmitted live in high definition video from nine cameras at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles, to a large LED screen in the park. The Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation presents South Bay’s Got Talent on Saturday, September 28 at 7 p.m. at the James Armstrong Theater. Witness the best and brightest stars from the South Bay including vocalists, musicians, dancers, aerialists, comedians and more! Performers will compete in front of the audience and a panel of judges. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place winners and a special acknowledgment will be given to the audience favorite. Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital and the Redondo Pier Association present the annual Rods, Rides & Relics Car Show on Sunday, September 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Redondo Pier. A favorite with local car enthusiasts, Rods, Rides & Relics features some of the finest classic cars in the South Bay. 100 cars will be displayed over the water on The Pier. Take a stroll along the pier, view the cars and then vote for your favorite. October 2 is National Coffee with a Cop Day and a few local police departments will be participating here in the South Bay. The Coffee with a Cop program was started by our own Hawthorne Police Department in 2011 as a way to help “break down barriers” between police and the community.

The second annual Beachlife Festival will take place May 1 through May 3 in Redondo Beach. The event will take place in Ruby’s parking lot and the Seaside Lagoon with an expected 7,000 to 9,000 attendees each day and two stages featuring chart topping, national acts. It’s going to be another spectacular three days of music and fun on the oceanfront. Early Bird tickets are on sale NOW! Freedom4U is launching its Service Leadership Program for the 2019-2020 school year. The program, which runs throughout the school year, asks selected participants to choose an area of service for their project. They will be mentored by experienced staff throughout the year to develop important leadership skills, such as setting goals, public speaking, organizing and teamwork. Teens will also gain vital knowledge on the logistics of charity work, including the administration of finances, budgets, supplies and resources. They will also learn to interface with other nonprofits and private businesses to provide service to the community. Participants will have an opportunity to win a scholarship at the conclusion of the program. Teens in the South Bay and Harbor Area are encouraged to apply. The deadline is November 1, 2019.
