South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide September 28, 2017
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

I regularly remind subscribers of this publication to always check the website for the most up-to-date event listings… and with good reason. Last Wednesday evening, I had just put the Weekend Guide to bed, and not ten minutes later, I received information on two fabulous events taking place on Sunday. I contemplated redoing the whole thing, but in the publishing world, deadlines exist for a reason - without them, you’d go mad. I did post the info to my website, but in the end, those two events didn’t receive the exposure they deserved and that’s a shame. This Weekend Guide was designed to be a convenience – everything you need to know in one place – but take a moment to check the website each morning. I don’t want you to miss anything!
This sounds like a ton of fun!..... The Volunteer Center is offering the community a chance to explore the basement of their historic Torrance building – a former mortuary dating back to 1929 – during a new, interactive fundraiser. Beginning September 28 and running through October 29, the local nonprofit is presenting South Bay Escape Room: Mortuary Mystery – the first fundraiser of its kind in the nation which mixes together local history with spooky, fictional fun in an immersive experience just in time for Halloween! “Escape the room” games have become very popular over the last several years. Participants are given one hour to solve a series of fun and challenging puzzles using strategically-placed clues, where both communication and teamwork are essential in figuring out how to solve the mystery and “escape.” Each room is created around a specific theme and time period, in this case, a 1930s-themed basement in a historic Torrance building. South Bay Escape Room: Mortuary Mystery revolves around the Stone and Myers Mortuary, which opened on Cravens Avenue in Torrance with great fanfare the weekend of February 29, 1929. Now, 88 years later, the participant “volunteers” have a chance to descend down a narrow, forgotten staircase into the recently re-discovered office of mortician Charlie Myers, which – according to the story – was abandoned in 1938. An entry in Charlie’s journal tells participants that strange things were afoot in the business of undertaking in September 1938, and there’s only one hour to solve the mystery before the volunteer shift ends. It runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons, September 28 to October 29. Tickets are $35 per person and must be purchased online in advance. For additional information and ticket purchase, visit the website at http://www.volcenter.org/escaperoom. The Volunteer Center is located at 1230 Cravens Avenue, Torrance, CA 90501.
