An Earth Day memory…… I was 8 years old when the very first Earth Day was celebrated in NYC on April 22, 1970. My mother took my younger sister and I down to Union Square in Greenwich Village via 5th Avenue, which was closed to traffic that day for the celebration. There were hundreds of thousands of people on the streets and in the parks, and I remember looking at the hippies and not quite knowing what to make of them. Sitting on the ground, wearing beads and bell-bottoms, flashing the peace sign, playing music and singing…. they seemed friendly enough, smiling and handing out flowers. One group was selling small containers filled with soil and seed that would eventually grow into grass. Mom bought one for us, we brought in home, watered it, and in just a few days, a tiny lawn sprouted. We kept it on the window sill in the kitchen and monitored its progress. This was a really big deal for us city kids! Back then, Earth Day was all about planting trees and cleaning up local parks. Today, we’re driving electric cars, capturing energy from the sun, eschewing plastic bags, utilizing ‘gray water’ and doing so much more than we ever could have imagined on April 22, 1970. My friends, we’ve come a long, long way. Happy Earth Day!
Be kind to your Mother Earth and have a fabulous South Bay weekend!
