The Collings Foundation presents the Wings of Freedom Tour at Torrance Airport starting today, Thursday, April 27 through Sunday, April 30. This tour showcases fully restored bomber aircraft: a B-24 Liberator and B-17 Flying Fortress, a P-51C Mustang and B-25 Mitchell. The public is invited to tour these World War II military planes or take to the skies for an unforgettable 30 minute flight experience. Admission for the tour is $12 for adults and $6 for children 12 years and younger. No reservations are needed for the tour. Flights aboard the B-17 and B-24 are $450 each per person. Flights on the B-25 Mitchell are $400 each. Guests are also invited to fly the greatest fighter on earth and get some ‘stick time’ in the world’s only full dual control P-51C Mustang. Las Candalistas is celebrating fifty years of giving at the annual spring event Out of Africa today, Thursday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Catalina View Gardens. Attendees will have an African Cultural Experience while enjoying the gorgeous view of the vineyard, the Pacific and Catalina Island. Enjoy an elegant Las Candalistas gourmet lunch, Catalina View Wines, Las Candalistas Gourmet Bake Pantry, Las Candalistas Creations, garden shop, silent auction and boutique vendors. Proceeds will benefit Community’s Child Hunger Heroes Healthy Bag Program, Family Promise and Toberman Neighborhood Center. Gates open at 9:30 and lunch will be served at noon. The North Redondo Beach Business Association presents the annual SpringFest Carnival & Community Festival beginning tonight, Thursday, April 27 and running through Sunday, April 30. The event features arts & crafts, kid’s zone, petting zoo, food court, gourmet food trucks and of course, carnival rides and games. Torrance Memorial Medical Center and Caring House will host a free screening of the PBS Frontline documentary Being Mortal tonight, April 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hoffman Conference Center. Based on the best-selling book by Dr. Atul Gawande, the film explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their relationships with the doctors, nurses and family members who care for them. The Circle presents the annual Palos Verdes Homes Tour, Delectable Living: Delightful and Delicious, on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Delectable Living: Delightful and Delicious is a two-stop garden party with music and edible treats. This annual tour is presented by The Circle, a Palos Verdes Art Center support group. All proceeds benefit PVAC. The event also features the popular Collectibles shop, artist and designer boutiques, and a raffle. Delectable Living will highlight two classic Rolling Hills properties – Rural Meets Renaissance and Enchanted Terraces. El Segundo Museum of Art hosts the Drawing Club every Friday in April from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In this informal drawing club, attendees will start with warm-up drawing exercises and then take inspiration from the featured artworks. The City of Hermosa Beach is hosting a Compost Giveaway on Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Community Center parking lot. The event highlights the success of the City’s yard waste collection program to ‘close the loop’ by giving back to the community. This giveaway is for Hermosa Beach residents only (bring some form of ID). No bags will be provided – you must bring your own bags, buckets or containers. The City of Redondo Beach and the City of Manhattan Beach will take part in the DEA organized National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The DEA is coordinating the campaign which is a collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies to collect potentially dangerous controlled substances from medicine cabinets. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Everyone is encouraged to drop off unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs or over the counter drugs (do not need to be in original container). This program is free and anonymous, no questions asked. What you can bring:•Unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs or over the counter drugs (do not need to be in original container). The Redondo Beach Historical Society and the City’s Historical Commission present the 125th Birthday Celebration on Saturday, April 29 to commemorate the City’s date of incorporation in 1892. The commemoration event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with activities beginning at Ruby’s Diner Parking Lot at Portofino Way and North Harbor Drive, and closing at Heritage Court, featuring the Historical Museum at the Queen Anne House and the Morrell House Living Museum, both located at Dominguez Park, 302 Flagler Lane in Redondo Beach. The Historical Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Morrell House Living Museum will be open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Both the Historical Museum and the Morrell House will feature displays, artifacts and exhibits. Additionally, the event will include guest speakers, a display of vintage automobiles at Ruby’s Diner parking lot, an 1892 photo display, and a variety of healthy refreshments. Donations support the operations of the Historical Museum at Heritage Court. The tenth annual Spyder Surf Fest will take place Saturday, April 29 from noon to 7 p.m. at Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach. The prop lights from the film La La Land will be reinstalled and lit on Hermosa Pier for one night only on Sunday, April 30 to celebrate La La Land Day in Hermosa Beach. The Hermosa Beach Pier will be transformed back into the set from the Academy Award®-winning film La La Land, and will host members of the film’s production team for a mayoral proclamation ceremony which will feature a performance by musicians from the film on the Pier Plaza bandstand. The official ceremony begins with a proclamation presentation by Mayor Justin Massey to members of the La La Land production team, which includes supervising location manager Robert Foulkes and music supervisor Steven Gizicki, who will recount their experience filming the magical scene on the Pier and at Hermosa Beach’s famous jazz joint, The Lighthouse. This will be followed by musicians from the film performing songs from the movie, including City of Stars, live on the Plaza as the ceremonial lighting of film’s vintage lamp posts takes place on the pier.7 P.M. Waterfront Education hosts Group Kayaking the last Sunday of every month from noon to 2:30 p.m. Kayaking is a fun and healthy way to spend time together. These excursions are led by knowledgeable marine science discovery leaders and King Harbor has a plethora of marine life to discover and engage with. Enjoy spending time on the water and connecting with nature. What to bring/wear: swimwear/water clothes, dry bag, phone/camera, towel, sunscreen, hat, towel, water, and snacks. The cost is $20 per person single kayak and $15 per person double kayak (minimum 6 students / maximum 12 students). Excursions are weather dependent.
