South Bay Weekend Guide July 13, 2017
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Joe Terry and I have been hosting The South Bay Show podcast on Blog Talk Radio for several years, our focus being all the fabulous things to do, places to go, and people to know, in the South Bay. Our sixth year anniversary is next month and we’re expanding our repertoire. I’m thrilled to announce our brand new program, in a brand new format, South Bay by Jackie Presents…..! This program will continue, and expand upon, what we began with the podcast – keeping you informed on all aspects of life in the South Bay – only now, we’ll be recording video segments at Manhattan Beach Studios. The first episode will be posted this weekend. Look for the new South Bay by Jackie Presents… page on my website and be sure to tune in and WATCH. Our inaugural show is with Manhattan Beach City Council Member Richard Montgomery and the topic is the recent Vista del Mar road modifications. Richard’s show will be a bi-weekly program and in the months to come, we’ll discuss various topics. Additional programming will cover a variety of subjects including the real estate market, financial services, leisure activities and special events, health and wellness, politics and more. We’re now scheduling our show line-up, and if you have any interest in becoming a producing partner, please contact Joe Terry at joeterry@thesouthbayshow.com or call 310-379-9822. (This is for producing partners only, not guest scheduling.) Here’s to new adventures!

I’m a history geek and appreciate the organizations keeping history alive with events like these…… The Western Museum of Flight Celebrity Lecture Series presents Pilot Down – Navy Rescue Helo with Marc Liebman, Captain, USN (Ret.) on Saturday, July 15 at 11 a.m. North SAR. This term, unfamiliar to most, still evokes powerful emotions for anyone who served with the US Navy in the Vietnam conflict. It was the northernmost region of the Gulf of Tonkin, and assignment to this area meant isolation and danger. For the helicopter pilots who were assigned to the Northern Search and Rescue region, it was especially threatening. Their mission was to be ready, on a moment’s notice, to launch out on a search mission, to find and rescue downed aviators. They were far into waters patrolled by the North Vietnamese, and far from any help from the main part of the fleet, operating at least a hundred miles away to the south. But, wherever there was an American aviator down, the Search and Rescue helicopter crews had to go, even if it was inland of the North Vietnamese shoreline. Marc Liebman, Captain, USN (retired), was one of the pilots who flew these hazardous missions, and many downed aviators made it home safe, instead of becoming guests of the infamous Hanoi Hilton. Captain Liebman is also a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, having flown SAR and special operations missions in that conflict. His story is one you won’t want to miss. A Vietnam era T-28 Trojan will be on display in addition to Vietnam era Jeep. Admission is FREE for Museum Members and $5 for Non-Members. Free parking is available in the Museum lot. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.wmof.com. The Western Museum of Flight is located at 3315 Airport Drive, Torrance, CA 90505.

This is one of my favorite events of the summer…… The community is invited to attend the El Segundo Art Walk on Thursday, July 20 from 5 to 9 p.m. Located in the Downtown and Smoky Hollow districts, over thirty creative El Segundo businesses will open their doors for studio tours and become a pop-up gallery displaying original artwork of Los Angeles based artists. ESAW pairs artists with local businesses to display their work on the premises. Yes, it is an art walk, but the art is only half of the attraction. The venues are what make the event so unique. El Segundo has an abundance of remarkable and historic architecture, most of which house businesses not open to the general public. The opportunity to gain access to these distinctive spaces makes for an extraordinary experience. The evening features fine art, live music, great food and studio tours. It’s fun and it’s FREE! El Segundo Art Walk will take place the third Thursday evening of the summer months – June 15, July 20 and August 17. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this….put it on your calendar NOW.
